Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立高雄師範大學 === 視覺傳達設計研究所 === 97 === The Visual Expression of the School Badge on the Vocational High School Graduate Student: Hui-Yu Hu Advisor: Prof. Ming-Hung Hung Graduate School of Visual Communication Design Abstract The school badge represents not only a school, but also influences the recognition among the teachers and students and their sense of belonging. It may leave a deep impression on the people, and be a tool of collecting funds. The characteristics of the vocational students are their youth and energy, demonstrating their passion of learning and spirit of energy. The characteristics, if applied to the design of school badge, will help satisfy the users’ need. Thus, this research aims to understand the status quo and development of the school badge design, collect the historical data, and then analyze these data for the further reference of the subsequent researchers of school badge. This research uses literature analysis and fieldwork to collect the relevant data from the 156 vocational high schools in Taiwan, and attempts to induce the relevant literature and design theory concerning school badge of the vocational high schools. The research result is as follows: I. The results concerning the school badge design and its specialty of rules, school anthems and principles are: A. The school badge design will change with the variants of the institutions, subjects, faculty, and periods. B. Most of the school features and subjects in the lyrics of school anthem are used in the school design; however, the lyrics that introduce the local environment, famous sites, and the specialty of a school are less mentioned. C. The school badge design reflects less the aphorism or the spirit of the school principles. II. The variations in terms of the school badge design with its changes of time, region, and subject are as follows. D. Red and green are both colors increasingly used on the school badge, mainly designed by the non-geometrical shapes. In the 1970s, the ecological conscious dominates the social discourse, promoting more themes about nature. In the 1990s, due to the multicultural and information development, the themes or the contents are becoming richer. E. More colors are used on the school badge in the northern and central Taiwan rather than the southern and eastern Taiwan. However, the frequency of white color used is the opposite. The yellow-orange colors and gray-white colors are only used on the school badge in the off-shore island; its theme is apparently influenced by the regional products. The shapes of school badge in the southern Taiwan are multiple and rich. F. Red and green are more commonly used on the badge of the departments of business and agriculture In the early times, the shapes of school badge are limited by arbitrary common symbols, such as the gear wheel used in the engineering department, the old coins in the business department, the tassel and hoe in the agricultural department, and the last, the anchor, rudder, and seagull in the marine school. The aforementioned statement proves that the design of school badge is significantly influenced by its time, region, department and its school specialty. III. The features that the badges of the vocational high schools share in common are as follows: A. Color: The colors of the school badge design are around two or four colors. White is most commonly used, despite the differences of times, regions, and occupations; then is green and red. The first colors or original colors (such as red, yellow, and blue) and the second colors (such as green and orange) are mainly used. Red is more commonly used in the early times; green in the current time. The halftone colors and warm colors are mainly used. B. Image: The image is more than the words on the school badge design. The words are mainly about the school names. The Chinese characters are more expressed, and then the image. C. Form of beauty: The symmetrical shape is mainly used. D. Shapes: The non-geometrical shapes are more than the geometrical ones, and among which the organic shapes are more commonly used. Circle and triangle are more used as the geometrical shapes. E. Themes: The objects selected are mainly from nature. The shapes are simple and perceivable, such as the zeitgeist symbols. Some common symbols, despite their differences of departments, have common signs to distinguish the differences. Despite the different expressions on the colors and shapes, the three primary colors and three primary shapes are more commonly expressed. This depicts the positive intention of the design: students’ willingness to learn and their diligence to face the future. Keywords: vocational high school, school badge design, color, shape
