Five heterosexual counselors who had homosexual friends/clients were interviewed. By exploring the experience and changing process in heterosexual counselors’ homophobic attitude, the author prompted these counselors to reflect their gender ideology deep down inside themselves to gain more sensitivity in gender issues. The research found that the key points which contacting with homosexual friends/clients make heterosexual counselors change their homophobic attitude are the numbers of homosexual friends/clients, coming-out of relatives or friends, being fond of homosexual people, positive interaction with homosexual friends/clients, and the identification of their own sexual orientation. Through more contacts with homosexual friends/clients, heterosexual counselors can perceive diversity in life and experience of homosexual people. It could shake the stereotype of homosexual stigma, have empathy with their situation and carry out gay-friendly behavior. The influences in clinical counseling are that the counselors start paying attention to homosexual issues, and have empathy with their situation and prompting themselves to reflect on hegemonic values in the main stream. The changing process in heterosexual counselors showed that it’s a non-linear model and each one has his/her individual diversity. According to the research findings, the author proposed some suggestions to counseling profession and to the future research. Li-jing Wang 王儷靜 學位論文 ; thesis 122 zh-TW |

The purpose of this research was to explore the relationship between heterosexual counselors and homosexual friends/clients, the changing process of their homophobic attitude, and the impact and reflection towards their clinical homosexual counseling.
