During 1871, he travelled in mountain area of Southern Formosa. Firstly, this thesis has the goal to highlight the narrow and simplistic research approach Taiwan’s photography history demonstrated during its early years. Ex: Emphasizing in era determination or local history position. Hence pointing out the research method this thesis proposes and its core values. The Introduction explains the motivation, objective and basic question raised by this paper hence structuring the framework and core of the argument. The article also investigates related questions discusses in similar researches which are mainly focused on investigations of Taiwan’s photography history. The author tends to point out the deficiencies current study methods face via confirmation of John Thompson’s research method. The article explores how through Thomson’s work, the deficiencies of Taiwan’s photography history research methods can be improved. The first chapter introduces John Thompson’s profile and his travels to the East through a historical narrative method. Serving as the basic research historical data of this thesis, Thomson’s photographing style relation with the 19th century’s style is also discussed in this chapter. The second chapter focuses on investigations of Thomson’s tours, the journals he wrote on the road, and how he links the location he visits with his works. The third chapter discusses the research approach this article proposes via comparing the landscape research approach and the cultural geographical research approach. Further, to analyze how the narrative between writing and image to create the landscape of Taiwan from a traveler’s point of seeing and develop the meaning of multi culture of Taiwan’s landscape. The ultimate goal of the thesis is to integrate the connection between image style in John Thomson’s 1871 local works filmed in Formosa and the 19th centuries photography, followed by how to build up new interpretation to study of Thomson’s photographs via field analysis of Thomson’s viewpoint noted in his travel journals and landscape research approach on his local works.
