It is used to cope with the uncertainties, such as the friction force in many studies, and the high nonlinearity of the magnetic levitation system. The dynamic model of the magnetic levitation system is derived in the first. A pid-like fuzzy controller is proposed to compensate the uncertainties that occurred in the magnetic levitation system. A simple set of membership functions and fuzzy rules are applied, which meets certain control requirements of such system. Then, in order to get the better tracking performance, fast rise-time and well maintained damped response, we introduce an optimization algorithm, called simplex method, to obtain the better control gain. An off-line routine based on the simplex method is outlined to tune the control gains for an optimum response.
