There are three goals of investigation; 1. To grasp the local color of the city to sort the current social, cultural and economical colors in the city. 2. Discover the characteristic of this city through citizen’s recollection and past media while discussing the need for exaggeration of certain aspects and images. 3. To propose a environmental color scheme plan for the city’s future renovation. The first phase “research of local colors” is done by acquiring the Munsell level of current color of the city. The second phase “Local opinion survey” is to collect a variety of recommendation and opinions from inhabitants of the city, the results are as follows: 1. Through the research of local colors, it is observed that the color of the city are between R (Red) and Y (Yellow) and colorless. The overall impression of this color scheme is calming, traditional and simple that fully reflects the colors of historical architectures. 2. Through the survey, it is found that “traditional” is the word that best describes Sin- Jhuang Temple Street. Although there are some parts of it that the inhabitants are unsatisfied with but overall they believe that their traditional culture should be preserved and adapted. 3. Sin-Jhuang Temple Street has stark traditional colors that are precious inheritance from its ancestors and cannot be replaced or imitated, hence in the color scheme plan it should be preserved. In addition to what the inhabitants want, in face with the plan for a historical and culturally rich city such as Sin-Jhuang Temple Street, respecting the ancient beauty of architectures and antiques would be another way to create a unique style and characteristic. 4. In the aspect of the color scheme, it is recommended that the base colors be traditional, classic and nostalgic, the complimentary colors be fresh, clean, calming and emphasis to create warmth, energetic and prosperous. 碩士 === 國立臺灣藝術大學 === 視覺傳達設計學系碩士班 === 97 === Abstract
Environmental color is one of the deciding elements for a location’s style and
characteristic. Nowadays, environmental colors are strong visual stimuli due to
commercialization when industrialization decreased the unique style and characteristic in
different areas. Thus the coordination and organization of colors, understanding of social
cultures and establishment of the environmental color impressions are vital and urgent. Aside
from influencing a person’s psyche and biology, colors have the ability to convey messages
and ideas. In order to decrease the environmental color pollution and restore an area’s cultural
character would not only need the unification of colors but create it through the location’s
culture and it people so that the character of the area came from itself for a true style of the
location.
Sin-Jhuang Temple Street is the earliest developed city in northern Taiwan. It was a busy
trade port where communications are frequent and amongst it was the introduction of
religions that resulted in the religious architectures and its unique culture. The Sin-Jhuang
Temple Street is chosen as an investigation topic to discuss its current state and possible
solutions and to provide some input as a citizen of said city. There are three goals of
investigation; 1. To grasp the local color of the city to sort the current social, cultural and
economical colors in the city. 2. Discover the characteristic of this city through citizen’s
recollection and past media while discussing the need for exaggeration of certain aspects and
images. 3. To propose a environmental color scheme plan for the city’s future renovation.
First a theory and structure of planning is created through research in related resources
and through field research to back up the theory to grasp the true color of the city and
consider the application of said color to the street lines and appearance of the city. The first
phase “research of local colors” is done by acquiring the Munsell level of current color of the
city. The second phase “Local opinion survey” is to collect a variety of recommendation and
opinions from inhabitants of the city, the results are as follows:
1. Through the research of local colors, it is observed that the color of the city are between R
(Red) and Y (Yellow) and colorless. The overall impression of this color scheme is
calming, traditional and simple that fully reflects the colors of historical architectures.
2. Through the survey, it is found that “traditional” is the word that best describes Sin-
Jhuang Temple Street. Although there are some parts of it that the inhabitants are
unsatisfied with but overall they believe that their traditional culture should be preserved
and adapted.
3. Sin-Jhuang Temple Street has stark traditional colors that are precious inheritance from its
ancestors and cannot be replaced or imitated, hence in the color scheme plan it should be
preserved. In addition to what the inhabitants want, in face with the plan for a historical
and culturally rich city such as Sin-Jhuang Temple Street, respecting the ancient beauty of
architectures and antiques would be another way to create a unique style and characteristic.
4. In the aspect of the color scheme, it is recommended that the base colors be traditional,
classic and nostalgic, the complimentary colors be fresh, clean, calming and emphasis to
create warmth, energetic and prosperous.
