Neutral gray is the pivot undertaken by color separators, while gray balance is often used for judging the color shading of the final printed piece. Therefore controlling gray balance must be able to promote print quality as well as the stability. This study was an experimental research in nature. The purpose is to lead the table by the print control strip and make the print quality control the basis. With the automatic gauging and back coupling of ink control system by digital print workflow CIP3, the experiment was to evaluate the print quality attributes (solid ink density, tone value increase, print contrast, ink trapping, color difference and color gamut) of gray balance process control method with offset printing processes on three substrates (coated, uncoated and light-coated paper), comparing with solid ink density process control method. This research control 50% tone value tint of gray balance to revise color shading with the traditional solid ink density process control method. The result discovered the gray balance process control method is more stable in the color maintenance than solid ink density process control method. In addition, gray balance process control method on three substrates surpasses the traditional solid ink density process control method in the standard deviation of average and maximum color difference. Gray balance process control method can reduce the color difference effectively, and make normal distribution curve more central and stable. By gray balance process control method and ink control system, this research reduces influence which the human factor produces in order to reach the goal “the near-end to proof, the far-end production”, “local to proof, other place produces”. To keep the print quality uniformity and the stability, it’s necessary to enhance the international competition in printing industry. In the future development for sale abroad, the results of the study can be used as the standard for offset printers to set the gray balance reference for their remote color reproduction and management.
