Taichung County has Being second to none in Taiwan in the development of the judo sport, and this can be evidenced by the winning of more than ten times of judo champion in elementary school category, at least five times of judo champion in junior high school category and at least three times of champion in senior high school category. However, despite the outstanding performances, data related to the judo development is scarce. As a practitioner having been learning judo in Taichung County since the elementary school age, the author feels it a pity that with such an outstanding performance, no related records are well kept. Thus, the study aims to record the Taichung County’s stellar judo performances and explore the reasons behind the rise and fall of the judo development in Taichung County. The study findings shall serve as the reference for further improvement in the hope of creating a high time for judo in Taichung County. This study employs the literature review method and conducts interviews, as well as divides the judo development in Taichung County into three parts, namely the “social type development of judo (judo clubs)”, “school type development of judo” and “judo coaches having contribution to the judo development in Taichung County”. The conclusion of this study is provided below:(1)The social type development of judo in Taichung County (judo clubs): The judo training and cultivation in this period were mainly carried out by the judo clubs, such as Ta-Chia Judo Club, Taichung Port Judo Club, Tung-Shih Judo Club, and Feng-Yuan Judo Club, etc. However, due to the financial problem, most of these judo clubs were closed down. Up to now, only Taichung Port Judo Club is still open under the insistence of Mr. Chen Tsai-Chi, the judo coach.(2) School type development:The judo development in this period has been well spread over elementary schools, junior high schools and senior high schools in Taichung County. In terms of elementary schools, some schools have established judo teams to promote the judo, such as Nei-Pu, Hou-Li and Fu-Chun Elementary Schools, etc.; the junior high schools in Taichung County having established physical education classes for enrolling students specialized in judo are Feng-Tung, Tung-Hua, Feng-Yuan and Hou-Li Junior High Schools; and the senior high schools in Taichung County having established physical education classes are National Feng Yuan Commercial High School and Hou-Zong Senior High School. These schools spare no efforts to train the students practicing judo and thus make Taichung County the first city in the country, which have achieved sound judo development in elementary schools, junior high schools andsenior high schools. (3)Thanks to the efforts of Mr. Chen Tsai-Chi, Mr. Lee Cheng-Hsien, Mr. Huang Hsiu-Tzu, Mr. Tsai Sheng-Liang and Ms. Wang Shu-Ting that the development of judo in Taichung County was prosperously boosted. They aggressively applied for government subsidies and devoted themselves to student training. With their arduous efforts and dedication, Taichung County can therefore come a long way as it is today and have good training sites.With the joint effort from major figures and lovers of the judo throughout Taichung County, Taichung County has achieved outstanding performances in judo competitions. Even though the competition results of Taichung County in recent years have gone backward, it is hoped to write another glorious page on the development history of judo in Taichung County.
