description 碩士 === 中國文化大學 === 藝術研究所美術組 === 97 === Abstract This thesis explores the beauty of light and shade expression in Baroque paintings by exemplifying La Tour (Georges de La Tour, 1593~1652) and Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn, 1606~1669)’s works. The scope of this research explores, in addition to the influence on later generations from their painting history, the comparison of the unique beauty of light and shade expression in the two masters’ paintings. The motive of this thesis: due to the fact that the exploration in art resembles the idealistic philosophical studies, there will be many unthought-of difficulties that make it very challenging. Through the various roles played by the “light” in Baroque’s paintings, there are many different forms of drawing styles revealed. Thus, I am especially interested in the light connotations and shade portrays. Moreover, the two masters’ light and shade expressive technique in Baroque painting is impressive. Through this research, literature reviews, esthetics philosophy, and expressive techniques, I hope to apprehend the nature of “light” in Baroque paintings and prove my personal theories. Furthermore, I hope to sort out my own painting language and establish the purpose of creative painting. This research study structure builds upon aesthetics perspective, image symbolism, expressive technique, material study …etc. In addition, lights and shades, and brightness and darkness are used as the main structure, assisted with oriental and western philosophy, fine arts history, artist autobiographies, painting artworks, and commentaries as a horizontal integration. Artists, painting albums, autobiographies, periodicals, academic thesis, and so on are used as references for data collection and categorization. The use of deductive analysis and comprehensive comparative analysis research methodologies make the overall structure and direction of this thesis even more solid. The research content is divided into seven chapters: Chapter 1—introduction, depicting the research motive and purpose, research scope, and research methodology. Chapter 2—background of Baroque art formation, discussing modern art trend of thought, background of Baroque art flourish, and aesthetics philosophy of Baroque lights and shades. Chapter 3—exploration of the expressive techniques of light shade, discoursing on the relationships between “light and shade” and space, as well as “light and shade” and color. Chapter 4—focusing on the beauty of light and shade expression in La Tour’s paintings, depicting his life and painting styles in different periods, his expressive technique of light and shade, expressive forms of light and shade, and the unique beauty of light and shade in his paintings. Chapter 5—focusing on the beauty of light and shade expressions in Rembrandt’s paintings, depicting his life and painting styles in different periods, his expressive technique of light and shade, expressive forms of light and shade, and the unique beauty of light and shade in his paintings. Chapter 6—comparing the light between La Tour and Rembrandt, depicting the implementation of light and shade in the two masters’ paintings, the light and shade variation principle, and the influence on painting history from their paintings of light and shade. Chapter 7—conclusion. In summary, during the process of researching on the two masters—La Tour and Rembrandt’s unique characteristics of light and shade in their paintings and the write-up of the thesis, the most valuable things I have gained are the many in-depth acknowledgements acquired, touched feelings, inspirations, associations, and reflections. Through the research process of this thesis, I hope to discover the original forms disguised behind many sheer appearances, and to elevate art studies to a “selfless” realm by the purification, saturation, refinement, sublimation, and transformation acquired through time. Here, I sincerely wish that this thesis will evoke sympathetic responses and interactions from the readers. Keywords: Baroque , Baroque Art , Light Shades.
