The research of the Vietnamese immigrants’ parenting stress and social support─An example of four counties in central part of Taiwan

碩士 === 靜宜大學 === 青少年兒童福利研究所 === 97 === The research attempts to study the relationship between the Vietnamese immigrants’ parenting stress and social support. In the mean time, the predictability of social support on parenting stress is also examined. It is a quantitative study. The research subjects are the Vietnamese immigrants, who have at least one child under 12 years old, in Taichung county, Changhua county, Nantou County and Taichung City. The questionnaire consists of demographic variables, Parenting Stress Index (Chinese version, revised by Betty Y. Weng), and the Social Support Scale (C. H. Wu version). The face to face interview was the way of collecting the necessary data. The interviewers were trained and fluently with both Chinese and Vietnamese. There are 317 subjects were interviewed and 293 valid questionnaires were collected. The data are processed by SPSS 12.0 and frequency distribution, t test, one-way ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis were applied .The major findings are: (1) Vietnamese immigrants need to learn the language and adjust the habits to accommodate themselves to new environment. (2) As to social support, it is easy to obtain emotional support, whereas it is difficult to obtain the material support. They are lack of formal support, due to not knowing how to acquire. (3) As to parenting stress, the children factors are more important than parents’ factors. Vietnamese immigrants are concerned about any difference between their children and Taiwanese children. (4) The demographic variables of Vietnamese immigrants make no difference to the needs of social support. (5) The family financial problem and language barrier are the main factors of parenting stress for Vietnamese immigrants. (6) Parenting stress is negatively significantly correlated to social support. The more social support Vietnamese immigrants receive the less parenting stress they have. (7) The demographic variables of Vietnamese immigrants’ and social support can partially predict the score on parenting stress. According to the preceding results, the following suggestions are proposed: (1) providing the material supports to immigrants, such as financial support and child care assistance. (2) Actively providing formal support through governmental intervention. (3) Continuously generating social services projects for immigrants. (4) Providing the respite care services, such as daycare services or nursery care to lessen the parenting stress, (5) Promoting the cultural recognition of the immigrants’ families. (6) To do research on immigrants nationally in order to understand the relationship between their parenting stress and social support. The results will be able to compare with that of Taiwanese residents. Key: Vietnamese immigrants; parenting stress; social support
