Abstract
The Redtop Arts is the first cross-dressing group in Taiwan; it has been famous for inheriting the Chinese traditional cross-dressing performance. Each member had his/ her unique performing style. The performances and life experiences of seven Redtop performers were discussed to uncover the reasons why they chose this career path and its effect on their lives.
The trend of cross-dressing corresponds to post-structural feminist Judith Butler’s theory: “Gender is performance.” Cross-dressing uses dressing, sign language, body movement and gestures to reveal different gender characteristics. In her theory, she proposed that gender itself is null.
Based on the concept of cross-dressing in gender research, this study investigated the phenomena of cross-casting. This study lasted four months and the participants were seven experienced cross-casting performers. This was a qualitative study using narrative inquiry as the research methodology. The data was collected through participant observation and in-depth interviews. The Riessman’s narrative analysis of poetic structure was adapted to analyze the data to show the meanings of value in life through cross-casting performance. To establish the trustworthiness, the researcher used long term observation, member check , peer examination, and audit trail.
