The purpose of this study is to develop a systematic methodology for the conceptual design of novel multi-speed drive hubs for bicycles. The topological characteristics and design requirements of bicycle drive hubs are first identified. Next, a catalog of usable planetary gear Mechanisms is systematically established with series and parallel connections of basic planetary gear modules. A feasible design process is then proposed to synthesize the gear ratios and gear teeth of planetary gear mechanisms according to desired speed ratios. A novel 16-speed bicycle drive hub is successfully presented to illustrate the feasibility of this design process. The results of this work are of benefit to the innovative design and development of multi-speed drive hubs.
