Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立中正大學 === 台灣文學所 === 98 === Due to Taiwan’s unique landscape, suspension bridges are commonly used in many mountain areas to cross short, rushing rivers. During earlier times, suspension bridges were mainly made of rattan cords and local materials. It was not until the Japanese Rule (1895-1945) that iron was used to build the so-called "Iron-cord suspension bridges”, which were later replaced by steel bridges. Despite being of historical value, many suspension bridges in Taiwan have disappeared or even been destroyed due to political, social or economical transitions. This research wishes to launch deeper insight on certain meaningful suspension bridges and how they contributed to historical and cultural local values in Taiwan. This study aims to investigate the transition of suspension bridges in Taiwan. In addition to the exterior form, symbolic meaning and stories behind the suspension bridges are explored through field work. While creating unique landscape beauty and cultural images, suspension bridge tourism also plays an important part in Taiwan. In conclusion, by revisiting the literature of suspension bridges, including poems from the 17th century until modern times, the cultural significance of suspension bridges can be seen. In addition, the conservation and revitalization of suspension bridges can be anticipated in the future.
