Their job performance affects directly medical service quality and patients’ satisfaction. The nursing professional commitment and competence are important factors related to the nursing performance. The aim of this research is to examine the relationship among professional commitment, nursing competence, and performance. By applying the lamination random sampling according to the official rank, nursing staffs in a medical center of Taiwan were stratified into groups by their official rankings, ranged from N to N4. A total of 204 nurses were recruited and surveyed. Questionnaires used in this study included Professional Commitment, Nursing Competence Rating Scale, and the “360-degree evaluation” for Nursing Performance. The results showed that nursing performance significantly correlated with nursing competence, but no significant relationship was found with professional commitment. Professional commitment was found significantly correlated with nursing competence. In addition, professional commitment was high among those ranked as N, and then gradually decreased to the lowest degree among those ranked as N2. The trend reversed for those ranked with N3 and N4. Components of nursing competence were increased accordingly with their official ranks, except for the component of research ability. The findings suggest the nursing managers to restructure the education and training curriculum for the purpose of improving nursing performance, by promoting professional commitment and enhancing nursing competence.
