Young citizens express their personal creativities with graffiti on the streets and consequently tend to increase street graffiti gradually. Street graffiti is part of current youth culture advocated by young citizens, which can be seen in many fashion products. Recently, street graffiti has been emerging in many areas in Taichung City and has turned the city into a fresh new look. These creations of street graffiti not only show the artistic viewpoint but also the aspirations to the society. The main purposes of this study were to understand the motivation of street graffiti artists by interviewing them three active street graffiti artists in Taichung, and to examine Taichung citizens’ attitude toward the street graffiti as well as their preferences for management strategies by a questionnaire survey which 451 effective questionnaires were collected. The statistical software SPSS12.0 was used to carry out the data analyses. The empirical study results are shown as the following conclusions: 1. The street graffiti artists started creating because of their interests or the effect of their education backgrounds. Their creations merged their individual thoughts and life issues to reflect some social phenomena, and consequently local culture was involved to show her image by their creation ideas. In addition, the artists would choose some proper places to do street graffiti and to avoid damaging on the properties of the owners. 2. Citizens’ attitudes towards street graffiti were grouped into six factors including: “thematic picture”, “degree of involvement”, “skills of graffiti performance”, “appreciation of graffiti”, “types and places of graffiti”, and “social phenomena”. Their preferences for management strategies were grouped into three factors including: “ruled by laws and regulations”, “setting up legal graffiti areas” and “clean up and management”. The respondents’ attitudes towards street graffiti were significantly different when their age, education levels, the frequency of attending art activities, and with/without artistic or design backgrounds were different. The same conclusions for preferences for management strategies as attitudes analysis except with the variable of education levels. After canonical correlation analysis, we found that only the preference for the “setting up legal graffiti areas” had significantly positive relation with their attitudes towards street graffiti. Based on the study results and conclusions, some suggestions were provided for the references of future planning and management, especially in terms of setting up a legal graffiti area for the fulfillment of graffiti artists, citizens and mangers as well.
