碩士 === 輔仁大學 === 語言學研究所 === 100 === This thesis conforms to the regulations in the M.A. thesis Guide Book of the Graduate Institute of Linguistics of Fu Jen Catholic University: “translation of a piece of linguistic classical work with footnotes, an analysis or a commentary”. Prof. Dr. Arnold Sprenger SVD, who is the Founder of the College of Foreign Languages at Fu Jen, have dedicated over half of his life to the education in Taiwan and Beijing and indicated the problems of Chinese education. In his paper “European Schools of Linguistics”, Arnold Sprenger revealed the fact that the study of the history of linguistic thought is very helpful to understand the research in modern linguistics. He also commented and reflected the development of Chinese linguistics. In this thesis, I attempt to inherit and promote the spirit of foreign language teaching of Arnold Sprenger. In addition, this thesis aims to focus on the importance of historical reflection upon foreign language teaching as well as linguistic training and further to be the basis of cross-cultural studies. In the end, it tends to discuss the development and direction of Chinese linguistics and teaching Chinese as a second language.
