This study aims to understand the characteristics of the expected nursing talents from the viewpoint of nursing homes’ managers. The findings that work competency of nursing staff is valued by managers are provided for nursing staff in long-term care service, people volunteering to be nursing staff in long-term care organizations, government making training policies, training in nursing schools, and organization managers to enhance the competency of nursing staff so as to advance the quality of long-term care. This study investigated the values of work competency organization managers to nursing staff in registered nursing homes in Taiwan. Two dimensions including nursing capability and personality traits were discussed as the work competency of nursing staff. With the 343 questionnaires distributed, 127 effective copies were responsed with the responsive rate of 37.1%. The most valued nursing competency by the managers of nursing homes was critical care with the average of 4.60; the average 4.51 of planning/evaluation ranked the second in various dimensions; the average 4.41 of leadership ranked the third; the average 4.40 of interpersonal relations/communications ranked the fourth; the average 4.35 of professional development ranked the fifth; and teaching/collaboration was the lowest with the average of 4.22 in the dimensions. The most valued personality traits by the managers of nursing homes was emotional stability with the average of 4.33; the average 4.32 of conscientiousness ranked the second; the average 4.01 of openness to experience ranked the third; the average 3.79 of agreeableness ranked the fourth; and extraversion was the lowest with the average of 3.66. The organization characteristics of nursing homes and individual characteristics of managers have different effects on the work competency of the valued nursing staff. Evaluation grade of the organization, years of practice, organization attributes, as well as individual educational attainment and age have remarkably different effects on the emphasis of work competency of nursing staff in various dimensions.
