The latter’s inerasable criminal records often bring them bad social impressions, and the regulation of disqualification also prohibits them from having particular occupations. Both factors cause those ex-criminals with extra difficulties to return to the community since they are unable to complete with others on the same starting point. Subsistence is the basic condition for after-inmates. Under the predicament of getting employed, more and more after-inmates shift their focus on starting businesses of their own. Food industry does not ask for high education or perfect skills; its low requirement becomes the first choice suitable for those rehabilitated entrepreneurs. Using the Motiuation Theory of Pulling and Pushing as the core concept, this research has developed a series of questionnaire, in which through in-depth interviews, the motivation for those after-inmates to start their restaurant businesses and the factor of being the successful entrepreneur that leads to self-accomplishment are thus understood. According to the result, nine male after-inmate interviewees all share the same thoughts that although it is not a hard task to start catering businesses, the percentage of being eliminated is oppositely high. It has been a while for after-inmates to be apart from the society, so whether it is their capitals, market information, or the public acceptance are all rather weak. Consequently, most of them choose businesses that require less capital as their turning point. For the motivation part, under the support of their family and friends, after-inmates can not only receive autonomy, but also self-fulfillment through this self-employment. Catering skill is the prerequisite for restaurant business. Nevertheless, the installment of training classes and the arrangement of getting licenses in the prison do not conform to what the public needs; in fact, a great difference lies between the two. In addition, due to social discrimination as well as the shortage of market recognition and resource, it is beyond imagination for after-inmates to start their own restaurant businesses. As for the factor of success, most after-inmates gather capitals from family, friends, or their own savings; they dare not put their hope on the specific loan for after-inmates. Moreover, they agree that the choice of location is one of the most importance factors for a thriving business. To them, uniqueness, price, serving quality, and public praise of the products are the cause to outstanding business achievement. Different from general entrepreneurs who take income, the increase of benefit and feat as the basis to a successful business, those after-inmate bosses base their success on making both ends meet. That is to say, after-inmates do not seek for external economic benefit but rather it is the internal self-accomplishment that they are looking for.
