Since the VANETs do not rely on a preexisting infrastructure, a vehicle in the VANETs constructs the links which are dynamically selected and distrusted. For providing mobile vehicles with security and private communications, numerous key exchange and pseudonym delivery (KEAPD) approaches have been recently developed for the VANETs. Most of them have employed public-key systems for increased security. However, the exponential computations in the public-key systems increased vehicles' overhead. The thesis presents a novel password-based authenticated KEAPD protocol for VANETs, which adopts mutual authentication, key exchange and pseudonym delivery to protect communication security and privacy. In comparison with the other related approaches, the proposed KEAPD protocol not only provides the same security properties, but also drastically diminishes the quantity of transmitted messages and the computational costs.
