Song Jiang, the leader of this righteous army, was closely related to the uprisings’ beginning, growth in strength, and failure in the end. “Water Margin” portrays the image of Song Jiang as a hero image, and its main thoughts center on the descriptions of Song Jiang’s loyalty and integrity. Song Jiang’s personalities were also correlative with the tragic ending of this righteous army. Historically, critics had different views on “Water Margin”, mainly due to their different perspectives on the image of Song Jiang.
Song Jiang, the leading character in “Water Margin”, is the subject of this study. Song Jiang was capable of leading such a complex group comprising many people from Liang Shan Lake. He must have something admirable in his behavior, so that he could appeal to people enormously. Every Liang Shan brave man had great abilities and vivid personalities. Through Song Jiang’s brilliant leadership skills, they were agglomerated to strive for their common goal together. Affected by Song Jiang’s thinking of “being loyal to the emperor”, Liang Shan brave men changed from their original stance of anti-government to receive amnesty and enlistment. Also, because of Song Jiang’s emphasis on gang righteousness and his profound sense of honor and justice, he was highly praised and supported by heroes from all walks of life, so that he could achieve imperishable feats.
