As a result, English textbooks are also designed on the basis of CLT principles. In light of the importance of teaching materials between teaching and learning, this present study aims to evaluate a set of college in-house English textbooks with criteria developed on the basis of CLT principles. This study employed qualitative approach, examining the selected materials in terms of macro analysis and micro analysis. An interview was also conducted to gain in-depth information of the underlying principles of the textbook design. Results of macro analysis showed the overall materials are prone to develop learners’ ability of integrative use of language rather than discrete linguistic forms. On the other hand, findings of micro analysis indicated that the materials are inclined to successfully manifest CLT principles except for minor deviation from CLT principles. In addition, the interview results were consistent with the findings. Based on the findings of this study, provided are implications for textbook writers who aim to develop teaching materials that are in line with CLT principles and a model framework for evaluating textbooks that claim to be in compliance with CLT principles.
