Summary: | 碩士 === 國立中興大學 === 物理學系所 === 98 === We experimentally study the segregation of two kinds of spheres which are of equal diameter and mass but with different coefficients of restitution. The spheres are confined in a circular box which is vibrated vertically. The segregation occurs at particular ranges of frequency and amplitude when at least one type of the spheres oscillates in synchronization. Because of the phase difference due to their different coefficients of restitution, two different types of spheres are prone to separate since they collide in large angles with respect to the horizontal surface causing an increase in horizontal mobility. We check the mechanism by defining an appropriate segregation index and measure the average height differences to quantify the level of segregation and synchronization respectively.
