Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立中興大學 === 歷史學系所 === 98 === In recent years, with growing up of second generation Chinese Americans, the issues about accommodations and cultural conflicts of Chinese immigrants’ children in America begin to emerge. In nowadays, due to the first generation Chinese Americans in Chinese American communities are in process of passing on their powers to their infants, the issues about second generation Chinese Americans have been regarded. Differing from using the personal interviews with Second generation Chinese Americans as their only resource of studying in other sociological articles, this thesis used the history of Chinese immigrants in America and the contrasts between Chinese and American culture to explain the transitions of familial relationship in Chinese American family. It also analyzed the accommodation and cultural identities of Chinese immigrants’ children in America. In the conclusion, this study finds Chinese immigrant parents, the first generation, usually hold different values with their children who absorbed American culture. When it comes to sensitive problems such as language use, educational attitude, consumption idea and dating, it is very apt to cause fiercely parent-offspring conflict inside Chinese American family. Furthermore, in the process of adapting to American society, Chinese immigrants’ children have to face many challenges at school, job market, interracial marriage and politic participation. After assimilating to American culture and integrating into American society, most of the Chinese immigrants’ children abandon traditional Chinese culture gradually. However, with the growing economic power in China and the trend of multiculturalism in America, Chinese immigrants’ children who lose Chinese culture lose their innate advantage. How to regain this advantage is the major subject that Chinese immigrants’ children should focus on in the future.
