How to use energy efficiently has become one of the upmost concerns for many countries. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report has shown that there is a great potential in buildings. Wireless sensor networks (WSN) is one of the building energy saving technologies widely used in practises. Sensors can be deployed inside or outside the building, sensing the temperature and light to regulate indoor air-conditioning and lighting systems. It has good potential in energy saving in buildings. However, managers still hesitate to implement WSN due to the tradeoff between costs and benefits. Soft system dynamics methodology (SSDM) is a methodology for problem solving and analyzing. This research proposes a systematic process to assist enterprises in analyzing problems for energy consumption in buildings. In addition, systems dynamics methodology is used in simulating the scenario of energy saving, after implementing WSN into the buildings. Furthermore, a case hotel is used to demonstrate the potential benefits of implementing WSN into hotel. The proposed analysis process is divided into three phases: environmental analysis, implementation program and benefits assessment. In the environmental analysis phase, there are five steps to understand and simulate the real consumption of building energy conservation. Implementation program phase sets up the WSN modules and using simulation to understand the impact of energy. The last phase is to assess the effectiveness of the cost-effectiveness after implementation. Case study showed that the proposed process provides hotel managers and technology vendors an effective assessment. WSN module is proven to be feasible and effective in energy saving of buildings.
