How to accelerate the process of excitation and demagnetization of the phase current is one of the main considerations when designing the power converter for SRMs. Therefore, this thesis investigates the structure, mathematical model and control principle of SRMs, and also analyzes the action modes and characteristics of several kinds of power converters for SRMs. Among the power converters investigated, the four-level converter has advantages such as higher efficiency and performance with the price of requiring extra charge capacitors and switching elements. In order to facilitate the design of the four-level converter, this thesis derives the equation for determining the charge capacitor so that the parameter design of the drive circuit can be more efficient. In this thesis, an electric circuit and motor design software are employed to simulate the 6/4 SRM and ensure that the designed parameters and control methods of the four-level converter are correct. The reasoning is problems which may occur during practical implementation can be substantially reduced. Finally, the microcontroller dsPIC30F4011 produced by Microchip Corporation is used as the control kernel when implementing the drive circuit for the 6/4 SRM. Several experiments have been conducted to evaluate the performance of different power converters for the 6/4 SRM. Experimental results show that the performance of the 6/4 SRM driven by the four-level converter is better than that of the 6/4 SRM driven by the asymmetric power converter.
