That is the concept called “Digital Home Network”. There are a number of protocols developed especially for digital home network environment. Basically, the potential users of a digital home network are all the members of a family, who are usually unfamiliar with network and computer technologies. Therefore, easy-to-use without complicated configurations is the major concern in designing protocols for home networks. UPnP, DPWS, Bonjour, IGRS, Jini, etc. are the examples. Although the concept of Digital Home Network doesn’t gain wide popularity yet, it has been seen as an important part of a digital life in the future. As more applications are developed over a home network, the Quality-of-Service of those applications will be a crucial issue due to the limited bandwidth and resources in information appliances. For example, the members of a family will use the home network to watch movies, listen to music, or use other multimedia services. The multimedia applications usually consume much network bandwidth and resource. It is possible that the Quality-of-Service of those applications will be degraded due to the scarcity of bandwidth and resource. Therefore, the QoS monitoring and control of home network is needed. Indeed, an UPnP QoS architecture has been proposed in the new UPnP standard. However, the heavy and complicated scheme proposed in the UPnP QoS architecture will make home network difficult to use. In this thesis, we will propose a simplified approach to address the QoS issue. The proposed approach is developed based on Simple Network Management Protocol. In a home network, information appliances will be connected by a switch of a wireless access point. We will make use of the SNMP supported in a switch to monitor and control the QoS of UPnP services.
