Methods: A survey of anonymous questionnaire was conducted to investigate the usage of nutritional supplements, source of information and usage reasons in 109 baseball players from 4 teams. The supplements were classified to vitamin/mineral, proteins, and reinvigorate beverage, functional food and instant energy supplements. The data was presented as percentage. The usage differences between teams were analyzed by chi-square. Result: Eighty eight players (81%) used some form of dietary supplements. Each player uses an average of 5.0±3.2 different products. The most frequently used supplements were multiple vitamin/mineral (68.2%), vitamin B complex (59.1%), energy jelly (40.9%), and calcium (31.8%), vitamin C (29.5%). The usage for vitamin/mineral, proteins, reinvigorate beverage, functional food and instant energy supplements were 49.3%, 9.5%, 13.9%, 18.2% and 9.1%, respectively. The major considered reasons for supplement usage were fatigue reduction/elimination (79.3%), nutrients replacement (59.8%), energy gaining (47.1%), physical ability increasing (39.1%), and performance enhancement (34.5%). The major sources of the supplement information were from teamates (60.9%), athletic trainer/strength and conditioning instructor (55.2%), dietitian (34.5%), friend (28.7%), and doctor (25.3%). The usage percentage of vitamin/mineral in the players of Uni and Sinon were higher than those of Brothers. The usage percentage of instant energy supplements in the players of Uni was higher than those of the other teams. The usage percentage of functional food in the players of Uni and Sinon were higher than those of Brothers and LaNew. There were no differences in the usage of proteins and reinvigoration beverage among teams. Conclusions: The use of nutritional supplements in the players of Chinese professional baseball league is widespread. The major reason for use was fatigue reduction/elimination. The major sources of the supplement information were from teamates.
