While they pursue individuality, they distance themselves from the outside world. The convenience brought by internet also gradually deepens our detachment from the society. Artists’ creative thinking thus become more personal in this way and the themes of their works also evolve around their personal experiences. This has also become the way of my works. People are the subject of the “Mirror Image” series in 2006. To put it specifically, there are only me and my ex-girl friend in my works. From 2006 to 2008, after three series of different works, in the process of my creation, I found that I was an artist leading a extremely simple life. My life was so simple that it seemed to be very calm. There are no one in the picture except me and my girl friend. It was clear to me that the simpleness of my life reflects directly in the nature of my works. In addition to self-concentration and art, the other concerns of my works were the people, things and events in my life at that time. At the end of 2008, lovers began to enter into my works as my subject since my relationship ran into a deadlock. Thus here lies the biggest transformation of this series, “Being Together”: instead of focusing on myself and my relationship, I started to observe other couples’ relationships. At this turning point, I started a series called “Being Together.” The self appearance in the picture is removed. Other couples are represented in the work. By doing so, not only their physical appearance was depicted on the canvas, their images and relationships are offered to the audience for observation. As for myself, an opportunity was offered for me to contemplate the significance of this series. Did I quench my yearning for past relationship by long-time observation of the couples in my paintings? Or I was comforting my desire by expecting a love relationship in the unknown future? I think it’s time for me to take a step back, be an outsider who is no longer in a relationship, and directly perceive everything through my senses! Shi-Chiang Chen 陳世強 2010 學位論文 ; thesis 61 zh-TW
