Le Tombeau de Couperin was written between 1914 and 1937, it was the only piano piece which Ravel composed during the World War I (1914-1918) and was also his last piano composition in his career. Each of the six pieces in Le Tombeau de Couperin was respectively dedicated to his friends who died in the war. Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin which was inspired by the Baroque French keyboardist François Couperin (1668-1733), was not only written mostly in the Baroque dance forms, but also one of the best examples of Ravel’s favorite use of his dance works. Le Tombeau de Couperin with the ingenious setting and the presence of the harmonic sonority showed the creativity of Ravel’s personal expression. Through out the process of this research, the author wishes to find out the composer perception of the work, and to hope the author and reader to be closer to the performance and interpretation aspects of the work.
