Under the impact of globalization at the turn of 21st century, how to boost organization's competitiveness has now become one of the most important issue. Schools are the official organization established to achieve the goal of education. A school is composed of teaching and administrative staff who are indispensable human resources in this kind of organizations. The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of the job satisfaction among the faculties of the public elementary schools in YiLan County. First of all, related literature were collected to explore the factors that affect the job satisfaction among those faculties. Secondly, a questionnaire survey and analyses were conducted to have an understanding of the differences in the job satisfaction among the faculties with various backgrounds or environmental variables. Lastly, suggestions were made based on the study results to serve as reference for education administrative authorities and schools.
In this study, literature analysis and questionnaire survey were conducted. The faculties of the 75 public schools in YiLan county were surveyed. The 47 staff who were surveyed on a trial questionnaire were deducted. Totally, 210 faculties were polled. In total, 194 questionnaires were retrieved, representing a response rate of 92.4%. Among them, 190 were valid, translating into a validity of 90.5%. SPSS12.0 for Windows (Chinese version) was sued for the statistical analysis of the data collected. The statistical methods adopted include descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test and independent sample one-way ANOVA. The results of the study are as below:
1. The job satisfaction among the teaching and administrative staff of the public elementary schools in YiLan County is above the average level.
2. In terms of sex, the overall job satisfaction of “male” faculties is a little bit higher than that of “female” staff.
3. In terms of age, the overall job satisfaction among the faculties aged below 30 is the highest.
4. In terms of educational level, the overall job satisfaction among the faculties with educational level of junior college is the highest.
5. In terms of marital status, the overall job satisfaction among the single faculties is higher than that of the married.
6. In terms of seniority, faculties with 14-20 seniority years have the highest overall job satisfaction.
7. In terms of position, personnel directors (including staff of personnel affairs) have the highest overall job satisfaction.
8. In terms of school size, the teaching and administrative staff of schools with 25 – 36 classes have the highest overall job satisfaction.
9. In terms of service location, the teaching and administrative staff in ChiaoSi have the highest overall job satisfaction.
Practical suggestions were presented based on the above study results.
