| Summary: | 碩士 === 國立東華大學 === 音樂學系 === 98 === Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) is the most well-known Brazilian composer in the 20th century. His early composition, A Prole do Bebê No.1 ,composed in 1912, was favored by the Polish piano master, Arthur Rubinstein (1887-1983) and thus earned him reputation. The composition was, for the first time, praised by the critics while many of his works were seriously criticized in his country. In addition, it is an outstanding multi-style composition, not only showing much influence from France and Russian music, but also containing distinctive musical elements of Brazil. There are eight pieces in the cycle and each has double title, one indicating the materials of the dolls and other referring their ethnicities and/or roles. Each piece show unique characteristics according to its title, manifesting the amazing imagination and creation of Villa-Lobos.
Based on the life and composing background of Villa-lobos, this thesis is to study the style and characteristics of his piano works, analyze the musical structures and forms, investigate the expressions, dynamics, tempo and articulation in the score, comprehend the acoustics and its connotations, and provide suggestions for piano players to fully understand Villa-Lobos’ intentions and make their own performances more completed.
