Taxonomic Revision of Hedyotis L. (Rubiaceae) in Taiwan

In this study, after the researcher’s detailed classifying according to type specimens of all taxa, the original literature description and evolution of characters, H. biflora (L.) Lam, which was mistaken as one taxon in the past, should be divided into three taxa. Their correct scientific names are H. dichotoma Cav.; H. racemosa Lam.; H. multiflora Cav. . Besides, the scientific name H. tenelliflora Bl., which was also misclassified in the past, should be corrected as H. angustifolia Cham & Schlecht. A scientific name H. strigulosa Bartl. ex DC. var. parvifolia (Hook. & Arn.) Yamazaki should be corrected as H. coreana H. Lév.; H. diffusa Willd should be corrected as H. brachypoda (DC.) Sivar. & Biju; H. uncinella Hook & Arn should be corrected as H. kuraruensis Hayata; H. hedyotidea (DC.) Merr. should be corrected as H. recurva Benth. Moreover, H. taiwanense S. F. Huang & J. Murata, which was wrongly combined to H. strigulosa Bartl. ex DC. var. parvifolia (Hook. & Arn.) Yamazaki in the past, should be sub-classified as a different taxon. The most important of all, H. pinifolia Wall. Ex G. Don, a new record for Taiwan, was found in this study. This study mainly aimed to investigate Rubiaceae genus Hedyotis classification of plants according to the information of morphology, seed and pollen, the microscopic structures, ecological and geographical distribution. The results showed that stipules, corolla shape, corolla coat the inside of the shape, location of stamen, style of form, the form of fruit cracking, fruit and seed morphology may be important for the classification of species. Furthermore, characteristics of stem, leaf shape, inflorescence morphology, seed, pollen shape, size and exine sculpture can be regarded as supporting information for classification and identification. Based on the results, Hedyotis species from Taiwan are treated as the following 15 taxa: H. angustifolia Cham. & Schlecht.； H. brachypoda（DC.）Sivar. & Biju； H. butensis Masam.；H. chrysotricha (Palib.) Merr.； H. coreana H. Lév.； H. corymbosa (L.) Lam.； H. dichotoma Cav.； H. diffusa Willd.； H. kuraruensis Hayata； H. multiflora Cav.； H. pinifolia Wall. ex G. Don； H. racemosa Lam.； H. recurva Benth.； H. taiwanense S. F. Huang & J. Murata； H. verticillata (L.) Lam.
