博士 === 國立東華大學 === 民間文學研究所 === 98 === BaoJyuan, the texts and performances in narrative music in the Ming and Qing Dynasty, has its religious connotation. In the Qing dynasty, the popularity of BaoJyuan which led to its conversion on contents and forms made the performance of BaoJyuan a kind of religious service and play the social function to relief the spirit of people to do good things and to entertain people. After rewritten in the format of BaoJyuan, the characters, the plots and the endings of the four folklores, Meng Jiang Nyu, Butterfly Lovers, Legend of the White Snake, The Cowherd and the Girl Weaver, fused different interests in comparison with the traditional folklores and reflected the reality of society which was closer to the feeling of large audiences. The study compared the plots and the formats of the four folklores in BaoJyuan in three periods, the Ming Dynasty, the Qing Dynasty and the present. Chapter one presents the motivation of study, the objects of the study, the methodology and the definition of “BaoJyuan”. The following four chapters discuss the four folklores, Meng Jiang Nyu, Butterfly Lovers, Legend of the White Snake, The Cowherd and the Girl Weaver, through theme study to find out the diversity between BaoJyuan and the traditional folklores by the analysis of the character personalities, the plots, and the connotations. The last chapter provides the value of the four folklores in BaoJyuan based on the viewpoints of historical literature and socio-culture. Finally, it is expected the results provide valuable resources on the study of folklores in BaoJyuan.
