Many organizations have adopted the most direct and effective way –organizational downsizing- to streamline their organizations. In fact, however, studies found that most enterprises downsized did not meet their original goals. This study selected the work groups from the military of Republic of China, and included a total of 50 teams (213 members) as samples. The relationships between organizational downsizing, job insecurity, group cohesion, and organizational commitment were examined. This study also employed hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) technique to explore the contextual effects of organizational downsizing and group cohesion. The results found that organizational downsizing has a significantly negative contextual effect on organizational commitment, and group cohesion has a partial mediating effect between organizational downsizing and organizational commitment. This study provides recommendations on the implementation of organizational downsizing and discusses academic and managerial implications in detail.
