The process serves my purpose of reflecting my inner emotions through visual images, i.e. my oil paintings, making the former more tangible. Regarding my creative concept, I explore the thoughts and feelings of my inner world by initiating the discussion from the theory of unconsciousness in psychoanalysis. In the process of creating this collection, I combine various elements in our daily life—objects, people, and events—and represent them in metaphoric symbols, to express the most direct of personal emotions. About the theoretical basis of my discourse: I begin from the theory of unconsciousness and explore the hidden meaning behind the symbols and signs emerged from the unconscious mind; then I proceed to aesthetic theories. Based on the aestheticism derived from Zhuangzi’s holism that “the world and I are one”, I wish to feel and appreciate the beauty of all things in the universe. Also, I attempt to realize the Western aesthetic perspectives concerning the philosophical theory of empathy, focusing on the mental activities when we transfer our own feelings upon objects that we enjoy. In respect to forms and means of expression, I mainly use symbolic icons to represent the aesthetic concepts of materialization and empathy. Then I look for inspirations from real life, expressing them by referring to the both Eastern and Western aesthetic forms in a style that combined both the symbolic and surrealist expressions. The formation and content of my creative discourse can be divided into three parts. The first part is “images of the mind”, discussing the ideas and thoughts in our unconsciousness and the mental world. The second, “images of life”, is where I express myself through symbols. With the third, “images of illusion”, I employed illusive and imaginary images to reveal my state of mind and the strong desire to break free from the bondages of the real world. To conclude, through the creation of art I hope to capture the most genuine emotions of my mind, transform my will and ideas into the theme of my artworks while experimenting with diverse forms and expressions of arts.
