Methodology of observation was applied. Data were collected by videotaping shared reading at home, conducting family environment checklists, and videotaping home interviews and observations. About 70% of the mothers from the families more advantaged for early literacy development were identified as authoritative in their parenting styles. During shared reading, the mothers from the families advantaged for early literacy development were more assertive , and their young children were more independent with appropriate behavior. About 50% of the mothers from the families less advantaged for early literacy development were identified as spoiling in their parenting styles. The mothers from the families less advantaged for early literacy development provided less positive support and feedback in shared reading and mixed their attitudes of democratic beliefs with authorative control.
