The plot is full of fear, violence and complex romanticrelationships between men and women. A film version of the play was madein 1951, starring Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh. It won three Academy Awards that year. Composer André Previn cooperated with author PhilipLittell to complete the opera version of "A Streetcar Named Desire." This was the first opera in Previn’s career. Previn used his rich musical backgroundcombined with a variety of musical elements to compose this powerfuldramatic work. This paper examines the life and the style of playwright Tennessee Williams and composer André Previn. Through the collection of all relevantinformation to understand the mood expressed by this story, performers canfind more appropriate ways to interpret the opera, and future researchers canaccess more information on modern American operas.
