In this study, we focus on developing a context aware framework based on the OSGi model to automatically provide appropriate information and services for users in a smart home environment. The proposed context aware service middleware (CASM) utilizes contexts to provide appropriate services for users. The ontology for smart homes is constructed from user context information and user defined reasoning rules are applied so that Java expert system shell (JESS) can be used to automatically reason out adaptive services for users. The reasoning results are stored in JESS Markup Language (JessML) format, and therefore their semantic information can be easily described, shared and reused in different smart home environments. The proposed system is implemented with Apache Felix, which is an OSGi compliant platform. It can integrate services and dynamically provide useful services for different users. Experiments performed with the developed prototype system show that the proposed framework can collect user context and automatically provide appropriate context aware services with the Felix platform for users in a smart home environment.
