The process and effects of the adolescent gay's coming out to their siblings

碩士 === 國立臺北大學 === 社會工作學系 === 98 === Looking over the mainstream documents of the issues of gay’s coming out of the closet, we found that most of the issues are aimed at the parent-child relationship in the family to explore, but neglect the functions and roles the gay’s siblings play in the family. In light of this, this research, with the objects of gays who come out of the closet to his siblings, delves into the process and effect of gay’s coming out of the closet, the shift of interactive relationship and the influence of the experience of gay’s coming out of the closet to siblings on those to parents. This research adopts the qualitative research method to go on the collection of the materials, and uses thematic analysis as the analytical strategy; through the statement of the life story of teenage gays, sequentially showcasing their important incidents and experiences of coming out of the closet in their journey of maturity and embarking on the integrated analysis among the cases we are engaged. The result points out that the process of the teenage gay’s coming out of the closet to siblings, with the observation of the homosexual tendency as the onset, goes from the confirmation of homosexual tendency to the revelation of the signs of homosexual tendency, which further incites the behavior of coming out of the closet to siblings. The factors include the equality and supports from the siblings, the influence of geographical distance on the psychological distance, the ranking of siblings, the combination of the siblings’ gender and the personalities of sibling. The teenage gays take passive behaviors, deliberate negligence, disguise and pretence, beating around the bush and mumbling, toward coming out of the closet to parents. However, if the teenage gays come out of the closet to siblings, they will positively get the supports. Further, they can overcome the thought against coming out of the closet to parents. Especially, the oldest siblings who are endowed with greater privilege and obligation, usually play a supportive and educational go-between to exercise their marked implication when the issues of coming out of the closet get off the ground.
