Since translated picture books are overwhelming, Taiwanese picture books are seldom been discussed. Friendship, no matter in picture books or daily life, is important to children, arousing the researcher’s interest. By reading closely and discussing how interpersonal frustration is been narrated and shown in picture books, the researcher attempts to interpret the hidden messages from them. The researcher uses close reading as methodology in this study and analyzes how characters fail to meet interpersonal needs from an interpersonal relation perspective. The texts of this study, fifteen picture books written by Taiwanese authors were adopted with purposive sampling, analyzed with types, processes, and consequences of frustration which were written into three chapters. Schutz’s theory of Interpersonal Needs, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, the concept of frustration from Freud, and Frye’s code were adopted in the study. To analyze the types of frustration and possible meanings, the researcher intends to understand the code and meanings of interpersonal frustration from outcomes by observing subjective and objective conditions. Research results as follows. First of all, the texts are inclined to focus on inclusion among three interpersonal needs: affection, inclusion, and control, as well as focusing on the quality to protagonists. Second, protagonists seem to pay more attention on external factors rather than individual’s feelings. Third, interpersonal frustration of the texts is inclined to be a satisfied result, which shows the stories are qualified to “mimetic” mode from Frye. Wen-Pao Lin 林文寶 2011 學位論文 ; thesis 129 zh-TW
