The main reason is that the design flow is not standardized and systematized, so the capability of mould design is mastered by some experts with rich experiences. Therefore, this paper proposes to develop a design guided system for mould design of automobile sheet metal. It collected knowledge and operation process of mould design through the interview of experts, and subdivided the mould design processes based on the concept of job analysis into some segments of process. After subdivision the design flow, some standard operation procedures can be established in terms of the importance and sequence order. Therefore the concept of mould design could be more clearly delivered to the designer in the systematic manners by means of standard operation procedures. The system is based on CATIA platform, which builds the design devices of mould mainly through the functionality of secondary development of CATIA system. In addition, with the assistance of VB programming for constructing the user''s interface, the user only fill the necessary information based on the program instructions, and then complete the whole design drawing of sheet metal. The system combines the concept of parameterized design, so the system also maintains design flexibility and capability to fit the different manufacture factories. Furthermore, the systematic visualization mode could not only assist the designer for fulfilling the key issues of mould design, but also improve the designer capability for detecting the design errors. The design time can be greatly decreased through some auxiliary tools developed by the system.
