Lo uses iron as the creative medium. His art concept origins from the oxidation nature of iron, and the effect or imprint that oxidizing process leaves on the surface of iron over a period of time shares a similar language as abstract art form. Automotive paint technique is used in industrial to prevent corrosion of iron and can also be used to achieve aesthetic purpose in its appearance. The oxidizing process in nature is compared and analyzed with automotive paint. Through its expressive form, Minimalism, Abstract Expressionism, landscape art are also discussed to explore possible connections between major art movements through out the history of art. Further discussions will be explored in the paper, regarding Lo’s concern of the importance of mediums, surfaces, illusions, time, space, locations in the process of art creation. Surface/illusions: traditional artists create what seem three-dimensional illusions on two-dimensional surfaces with paint. Not only the image is three-dimensional, a three-dimensional space is also created by the layers of paint adding on to the surface of the canvas, thus creating another three-dimensional space from the thickness of the paint. The surface (canvas) itself is not flat, but also a three-dimensional object of its own. Different artistic techniques can also manipulate the illusion of space which will be further discussed in the paper. Time: It is a fact that time exists. Camera or illustration can only capture a moment of an image, it continues after that captured moment or the exhibition of that image. The artist also needs to consider the matters of perseverance of the art work, and its ongoing effect in relation to the environment holding the art work itself. Space/ Location: The relationship of the art work and its environment also effects the impression it brings on its viewers, different environment brings different experience to the viewer. Specific location will also have different impact and dependency relationship to an art work which may be caused by the different element factors found in environment, nature or people. Lastly, Lo, through his art work, uses the texture of layered corrosive imprints and its contrast to a glossy automotive paint surface to demonstrate how mediums, surface, time, space, and location may bring as an ongoing impact to an art work.
