Experiments conducted use toluene as the thinning substance, with compositions of (0% thinner, 100% retardant), (20% thinner, 80% retardant), (30% thinner, 70% retardant), (40% thinner, 60% retardant) for impedance tests. Using the above ratios to apply a coating on a steel plate sample of 20x20 cm, the sample is then heated at CNS12514 for one hour to collect data on temperature changes. Comparison of resultant data yielded four factors that could impact on the fire resistance capability of a retardant. 1.By comparing the impedance curve and temperature curve from heating can show the difference between characteristics of different retardants. 2.During experimentation, coatings with high ratios of thinner to retardant, show obvious signs of layered segregation and sediment. 3.When a sufficiently thick coating is applied, the thinner ratio does not provide direct impact to a retardant’s fire resistance ability. 4.In tests with different coating thicknesses (1 mm, 0.6 mm, 0.4 mm, 0.35 mm, 0.2 mm) of undiluted retardant, heat resistance is directly proportional to thickness.
