The former ones are essential to develop an automatic tissue scanning platform and the later ones can help to improve the quality of the stitched images. A CCD camera with microscope is used in the proposed system to collect partial images from a tissue specimen. The height of the specimen can be adjusted automatically by the system based on the results from an edge-detect program. After the tissue has been properly focused, it is moved horizontally with the platform and an image is taken after each constant displacement. The horizontal movement is drived by a SMAC linear moving coil actuator with repeatability equal to 0.2μm. With the assistance from the library provided by Labview, the image processing subroutines can effectly recompose a panoramic picture from the images on the same row.
