The accuracy of tool size will affect the quality of processing. If measurement instruments can effectively measure the tool geometry, then we can plan and manage the accuracy of tool grinding. The purpose of this thesis is to develop an image inspection system for tool grinding of a 5-axis tool grinder. This system with rapid assembled and disassembled inspection mechanisms was mounted on the tool grinder. The user-friendly human machine interface was developed by Borland C++ Builder and HALCON image processing libraries, and it is an important kernel for hardware and software communication. This interface shows the image of cutting tools for geometry analysis and reads the mechanical coordinates from the controller of the tool grinder for auxiliary measurements. Furthermore, it has a tutoring manner for users to operate the measuring procedures. The inspection system can measure the basic geometric parameters (helix angle, axial relief angle, diameter, and radius) for square end mills, ball nose end mills, radius end mills, reamers, and drills. Afterwards the grinding processes can refer to the measuring results to compensate the dimension for tool grinding.
