Among many community development strategies, the “Cul-de-sac” is treated as a powerful approach to increase suburban neighborhood’s security. However, some researchers argued that the Cul-de-sac patterns interrupt the through movement of people and in turn reduce the policing effect of people presence. Therefore, it enhances opportunities for crime. On the other hand, most previous crime prevention related studies in Taiwan have concerned on the relationships between crimes, offenders, and offences. Only few recent researches explored the linkages between space and crime prevention based on the specific community, or overall city, or at regional large scale. Due to lacking of a common consensus on the relationships between space and crime in many early researches, this study aims to probe the correlations between burglary crime numbers with spatial configuration for the areas (smaller than neighborhood) on the urban edge and tries to define a set of planning principles for future community development. After field surveying of 30-meter buffer zone along the major arterials/corridors in Taipei’s Beitou District, the statistical analyses of this study finds that the higher the burglary related crime rates, the higher number of convenient stores. The busier the road intersections and the higher the mixing land uses within a block or a zone, the serious the burglary crime rates. Also, the more the houses and apartment complex (3-7 stories height) built within an area/block, the higher the burglary happened. On the contrary, the higher the area of residential usage exclusively and the lower number of housing (less than 3 stories height), the lower the burglary crime rates.
