Artists of painting always like to paint the differences of it in four seasons. What we have frequently seen is combined-four-screens of landscape for interpreting of spring, summer, autumn and winter amazingly assorted. I, the undersigned, a mountaineer, like the magnificence and vigorous sprit of mountains. But, it is really hard to convey or transmit my feelings on my artworks. The landscape paintings of Zhang Da Qian always make one feel way above par, the carefree bearings of his artworks are really hard to follow or imitate. His being fond of landscape paintings extended to a cubist architecture, a garden therefore was built. His garden, Garden of Eight Virtues was actually his vast painting canvas. Trees, flowers and grasses were all his painting subjects. He never thought his garden was a place for his leisure or pleasure. It used to be all for his works. And he worked his heart out there,even his hard working failed his eyesight. This report breaks down Zhang’s landscape paintings into three main portions as early period(1899-1940), middle period(1941-57) and terminal period(1958-83),separately covering “application of brush and ink”, “composition of a painting”and “color combination”, to analyze his artworks in different periods. His landscape paintings at early period, his main objects were the four monks(Shi Tao, Shi Xi, Bada Sharen and Jian Jiang) of the end Min Dynasty, following the styles and features of literary men; at middle period, main imitating objects were the frescoes of Dunhuang, and the artists of the Song Dynasty and the Yuan Dynasty; at terminal period, were the creations of fusing splashed ink and splashed colors. His landscape artworks from the periods of imitation the ancients to the creations of his unique splashed ink and splashed colors were fulfilling a saying which says “To travel thousands of miles means to read thousands of books”. Especially during the period when the country was in chaos of war, he was unafraid of great difficulties or hardships of traveling. He traveled along the famous mountains and mighty streams covering inside the country and abroad. It is only when one climbs mountains and walks by the streams, then be able to comprehend the spiritual influence of beautiful mountains, appreciate the natural variations of changing, then delineate hills and ravines in mind.
