Summary: | 碩士 === 東吳大學 === 中國文學系 === 98 === In the late Ming Dynasty,there were three brothers, also known as Three Yuan - Yuan Zong-dao, Yuan Hong-dao and Yuan Zhong-dao. Their poetry, which focused on clarity and sincerity, produced a following eventually known as the Kung An school, the central belief of which was that good writing was a result of genuine emotions and personal experience. Although Yuan Hong-dao was the leader, Yuan Zong-dao, the big brother with a higher position in society, was actually the key person behind the Kung An School. On one hand, he formed his own literary club. The members of his club were his two brothers and the friends in official position. Therefore, they were not all from the same place, Kung An county of Hubei province. Yuan Zong-dao transformed the Kung An School, a local club, into an association for officialdom. His importance in Ming’s literature mainly resulted from the contribution to broadcasting the Kung An School from the south of China to the north. On the other hand, as the eldest brother in the family, Yuan Zong-dao influenced his two brothers the most in both life experience and literature.
This essay mainly discusses the style of Yuan Zong-dao’s literary theory and includes his character, learning, and literature in the theory system. Also, it will show you the contradiction between the historical cultural background of the theory and the theory itself through a new insight.
There are six chapters in this essay. Chapter one focuses first on the motivation and purpose of this essay, and then explains the way of this research and version. Next, it introduces the related books and periodicals uesd. Chapter two focuses on the whole life of Yuan Zong-dao, hoping to express the pain and sorrow of the scholars in Ming Dynasty through the unstable political situation, social economic situation, and academic background at that time. Chapter three will describe how the theory of Ancient School and the thought of Jiao Hon and Lee Zhi influenced the theory of Kung An School. Chapter four covers what Yuan Zong-dao created in his poetry, the solution he had when he felt painful to life, and the characteristic of his poetry. Chapter five focuses on his artistic style through his prose. Chapter six will be the conclusion of this essay. The aim of this essay is to make all the readers know more about Yuan Zong-dao, the creator of the Kung An school.
