This research studies the Not-In-My-Back-Yard (NIMBY) resistance against increasing nursing homes operating in communities and the community relation maintained by these nursing homes with its neighbors. The objectives of this research are to assess the community’s view toward the nursing homes, to evaluate the accessibility of nursing homes information, to estimate community residents’ degree of acceptance toward the NIMBY and non-NIMBY nursing homes, to determine factors affecting community residents’ attitude toward NIMBY nursing homes, and to analyze interaction among the nursing homes, the community and other social services. This research adopts qualitative approach and in-depth interview as its primary data collection methodologies. There were total twenty-two interviewees including owners of the nursing homes, leaders of the community and community residents. The result s of this research are as follows: 1. The need of senior residents in the nursing home shapes its operation mode. 2. Interviewees hold conservative opinions and passive attitude toward information they received about the nursing homes. 3. Distance of the nursing homes and degree of negative impact to the community are direct proportional to level of opposition from the neighborhood. Surrounding environment, such as proximity of the nearby hospital, and demography of the community, would also influence community residents’ view toward the nursing homes. 4. The nursing homes think the best ways to reduce conflict with its neighbors are to integrate into the community, upgrade its appearance and take an active role to build positive relationship with the community. 5. The amount of effort and human resource devoted to build community relation can directly affect the result. 6. Government grading system of the nursing homes provides no help on community relation building. 7. There is discrepancy between community residents’ expectation and nursing home operators’ offer on compensation. These findings can help nursing homes selecting future locations, developing better community relation and outlining much needed assistance the nursing home should get from corresponding government agencies.
