Nevertheless the problems in manufacturing and assembly aspects are difficult to be handled by traditional CAD systems, and then are usually resolved by designers’ experiences. Based on the concept of concurrent engineering, this research constructs a computer aided design module for computer cases. A designer can use the module, which embedded with related sheet metal design rules and assembly relationships, to perform parametric designs. During the designing process, a designer applies the “detection function” to find out if her/his design violates the rules, and the module provides error messages and suggestions on pop-up windows. Once we modify a component, the module can also acquire the resulting effect on the corresponding component in assembly relation. Therefore even without domain knowledge, a designer can accomplish product designs easily by following the instructions from the module to reduce mistakes. We could then increase the product design efficiency and furthermore diminish the cycle time on product development.
