Description
Summary:碩士 === 慈濟大學 === 社會工作研究所 === 98 === This study aims to examine how males live their marriage lives and construct the meanings of marriage after severe burns incidents. The method of narrative research is employed in the study with an emphasis on the narrators’ themes to comprehend how incidents affect their marriage lives. The experiences of the two interviewees reveal that males with a conventional sex-role attitude prior the injuries tend to identify with their gender role as a significant basis for the marital experiences. They regard themselves as the provider in charge of the family. In the face of marital conflicts, they are liable to be self-orientated and attribute problems to wives’ personalities. After the injuries, however, the traditional male gender role is challenged which decreases their self-evaluation and increases their needs of care and support from wives. While their needs are not fulfilled and decisions are not supported, they receive the feelings of frustration, loss and disrespect. Among the burn population, middle-aged males are on the high side whose majority work in the labor industry mainly with a high-school or lower degree and a conventional sex-role attitude. In the field of social work, nonetheless, the majority are females mainly with a college or higher degree and a gender equality attitude. Therefore, the social work profession is supposed to reflect on the impact of the gender ideologies on services.
